Seanad Nominations

Dear Members,

Election fever continues. Now that the General Election has passed we are on to the Seanad Elections.

The Irish Internet Association are for the first time a Seanad Nominating Body on the Industrial and Commercial Panel. It is the mission of the IIA to make Ireland a leading web-enabled economy. Engagement at government level can be a key support in achieving this.

The deadline for nominations is March 14th. To date a number of candidates have approached us seeking our nomination. I have proposed to the board and it has been approved, that as they are the membership representatives at board level for the IIA, it would be most appropriate for them to make the candidate selection for the applications we receive.

The criteria upon which they will make their selection are as follows:

  1. Knowledge and experience of the sector, a track record as a strong voice on sector issues including but not limited to the following: Skills Shortage and STEM education, National Broadband Strategy, Digital Literacy, Ecommerce Adoption,  Support for Entrepreneurs, Open Data, Data Privacy.
  2. Electability:  To have a Senator nominated by the IIA will give us the opportunity to have a Senator focused on and answerable to the interests of our industry.  They must however get elected first. As such, their competitiveness/electability will be given consideration in making the final decision.  It is worth noting that there are many nominating bodies on the Industrial and Commercial Panel and it is possible for a single candidate to be nominated by multiple nominating bodies.  Should the need arise we may wish to nominate a candidate that is also being nominated by a like-minded nominating body to maximise candidate chances and the interests of the nominating bodies.

All nominees seeking the IIA nomination must submit a cover letter and personal statement in relation to these two criteria to members@iia.ie with "Seanad Nomination" in the subject box by no later than Friday 4th of March (that is THIS Friday).

All applications will be sent to the board who will make their deliberations and selection by Friday March 11th.

It has been left open to the board that in the case of strong competition, they may take the opportunity to invite a shortlist for a short interview presentation.

With kind regards
